About The Instructor
Benjamin Berry is a nomadic hoop dancer, instructor, and performer who has been hosting workshops in dozens of cities across the country since the summer of 2015. That year he connected with the online hooping community by participating in Hooping Idol Season 5 and the Electric Forest Hoop Troupe contest, ultimately earning him Hooping.org's Male Hooper of the Year. His mission is to help others become more confident, empowered, and embodied through intentional movement and creative self-expression.
*Anyone who is under 10 years of age should have an adult taking the workshop with them to make sure they stay on task.
SHOWTIME: 2 Day Performance Intensive
Saturday: Hooping Below the Belt (4:00-6:00 PM)
All Levels & Ages*
Explore a contemporary and underutilized style of hoop dance which brings awareness to the lower half of the body. Learn to rely less on your hands, travel through space, inventively recover from drops, experiment with floor work, and manipulate your hoop in creative ways using legs, feet, and contact with the ground. The result is a more full-body, dynamic hoop dance experience. It is recommended that students bring a hoop with a diameter that comes up to their waist or slightly less.
BY THE END OF THIS CLASS STUDENTS WILL BE LEARN:
- Creative wedgie entrances and transitions
- Fancy pick-ups
- Knee hooping transitions
- Coinflips on the ground/legs
- Floor work exploration
Sunday: Storytelling on Stage (4:00 - 7:00 PM)
All Levels & Ages*, All Props Welcome
Explore theater and improv coaching. Learn to embody a message, emotion, or character through movement- the result being personal catharsis or a deeper, more meaningful connection to your audience.
THIS CLASS WILL COVER:
- Theatrical dance coaching
- Storytelling elements such as dynamic progression and scene setting
- How to create emotion through movement and music, along with intentional dress and theatrical uses of props
Students will have time to work with Benjamin and choreograph a mini story to potentially share and take home to develop further in their personal practice. Students will share takeaways and hear feedback in a “closing circle” type fashion. Performing for the class is completely optional.
The Street Circus Guest Workshops Series is a performance education program with seasons that run annually September through April. Workshops are held among 14 partnering venues in Greater Philadelphia. Learn how easy it is to have fun with a prop and discover all the health benefits that come with it.
Join us as we celebrate movement in spectacular ways!
