WORKSHOP FAQS
This day of workshops will occur in two parts. Part 1 focuses on hoop folds and contact hooping. Part 2 teaches chest rolls/variations and balancing techniques. Please see schedule below for full details.
These workshops are open to all levels.
Part 1 Schedule (1:00-3:30PM)
Continuous Folding Hooping
Growing in popularity over the past two years, “folding” has become a genre of hoop moves that is essential for a complete skill set. It forces hoopers to explore manipulating their hoop in the third dimension, rather than sticking to the standard wall and ceiling planes. Not only that, but almost all the folded hooping moves feed straight into and out of each other within combos.
Highlights Include:
- Basic folded circuit
- Carousel
- Folded vortex
- Escalator variations
From these foundations, Mike will lead the class to experiment with creating your own infinite combos. He will also be covering more advanced techniques, including folded tosses, catching tosses in folding moves, and endless escalator entries.
Contact Hooping
Contact hooping is the idea of manipulating the hoop without ever gripping the hoop with your hands. Most hoopers have probably stumbled across some of these techniques by accident, such as catching a drop, for example. Students will gain a greater understanding of how to learn transform these little accidents into an intentional style of hooping that resembles contact staff manipulation. This portion of the workshop will begin by building upon the continuous folded hooping fundamentals, such as learning how to fold your hoop without ever gripping it, and expand into new concepts, many of which Mike has developed personally.
Highlights Include:
- Wrist and arm wraps
- Schmear
- Key positions for no-grip escalators and entries from behind the hoop
Part 2 Schedule (6:00-8:30PM)
Chest Rolls
Have you ever thought to yourself, “I’ll never be able to do a chest roll"? Come to this class! From beginner to advanced students, Mike will teach everyone how to do a PERFECT chest roll. Many people learn bad chest roll practices by throwing the hoop from one hand to another, but Mike will focus on how to have a perfectly controlled chest roll that has contact from finger to finger. After students are equip with the foundations of maintaining contact, Mike will shift focus to different roll variations.
Highlights Include:
- How to perfect your chest and back rolls
- Neck duck-ins
- Chest roll from a toss
- Chest roll to back roll
- Angular/sloppy chest rolls
Hoop Balance Techniques
Mike has been obsessed with hoop balance for the last 2 years and this class is an opportunity to share all he’s learned. In this portion of the workshop, students of all levels will learn the basics of hoop balancing, and how to expand this to incorporate new transitions and ideas into your flow. Students will also build upon the chest rolls they learned in the first portion of the workshop and learn how to transition from a chest roll to a hand balance.
Highlights Include:
- Hand and fingertip balances
- The butterfly
- Face balancing
If you seek calmness mixed with constant concentration in your practice, come balance some hoops with us!
